Panel Discussion: Is a Clustered Computer In Your Future?
Panelists: Ron Minnich, Project Beowulf; Fred Glover, Digital Equipment Corp.; Bruce Walker, Tandem Computer; Rick Rashid, Microsoft, and two more to be confirmed

Distributed systems technologies have culminated in the current round of Multicomputers or Cluster products. Some clustering products are aimed at solving higher availability, others are directed towards scalable computing. This panel will bring leaders of some of the different clusters projects together to explore different tradeoffs, such as message interfaces, file systems, single system image/levels of transparency, performance, NORMA vs NUMA archiectures.

  The Future of the Internet
Speaker: John S. Quarterman, Matrix Information and Directory Services (MIDS)

Will the U.S. continue to contain more than half of the Internet? Will one company make all the software? This talk uses graphs, geographical maps (both static and animated), tables, and text to present historical data about the growth of the Internet, followed by predictions of future growth, worldwide and regional, with speculations on what will happen to current Internet players, corporate, national, and personal.

Beyond Wearable Computing: Personal Imaging as Example of Humanistic Intelligence
Steve Mann, University of Toronto

My "WearComp" photographic apparatus of the 1970s and early 1980s, as described in https://www.wearcomp.org/ieeecomputer.htm, comprised a body-worn computer with a video screen over one eye and a miniature keyboard in one hand. This invention formed the basis for a new genre of photograhic imaging called "dusting" (Lightspace Rendering). Multiple, differently exposed/illuminated images of the same scene or objects were captured under program control of the apparatus. I will present early examples, together with new results in photometric imaging arising from this work. Most recently, this Wearable Wireless Webcam is built into ordinary-looking sunglasses and clothing which include a video processor and wireless Internet connection. The apparatus has become a visual extension of my mind and body, facilitating a new genre in documentary video and, I believe, connected collective humanistic intelligence. It formed the basis for my social commentary video "ShootingBack." For further information, see: https://wearcam.org/research.html.
