• 21 million new hosts added to the Internet each month
• Not adding 21 million new system admins
• Efficiency of compromising systems is increasing
• Techniques for post-compromise concealment improving
• DDoS tools are evolving (3rd generation in just over 1 year -- Unix and Microsoft Windows)
• Law Enforcement lobbying for stronger laws, greater powers of search and seizure
• Software/OS vendors lobbying for no government regulation or oversight (they know what is right for customers, right?)
• Downward pressure on budgets (public and private)
• Heavy pressure to increase business use of the Internet ("Can you say 'wireless'? Sure. I knew you could.")
• Consumers given little choice in how Internet e-commerce is done (use it, or don't get served)
