This talk will describe some of the difficulties encountered by UNIX administrators as they move either from UNIX to Windows NT or between the two. David will talk about some of his own experiences in working with Windows NT coming from a UNIX background, and give his views on where things are heading.

David Korn is currently chief software architect in the research division of AT&T Labs where his primary assignment is to explore directions in software development techniques that improve programming productivity. His best-known work is the Korn shell, ksh, which is a POSIX-compatible UNIX shell and a high-level programming language. He is a Bell Labs and an AT&T Fellow.

Microsoft's Zero Administration Windows (ZAW) initiative seeks to answer some of the pressing concerns companies have with managing large numbers of Windows PCs, including reducing the cost of ownership per PC. Dan will discuss this initiative and how it fits in with other systems management initiatives such as SMS.

The introduction of Windows NT into enterprise networks creates both management and political challenges in shops dedicated to other computing systems. Windows NT is a new, feature-rich operating system, but faces stiff opposition from many quarters. This panel will review many of these challanges as well as techniques for smoothing out the turbulence created by the appearance of Windows NT. Audience participation in the discussion will help elucidate both problems and solutions to this challenge.
