With the upcoming release of Windows NT5, Microsoft is adding a number of features that will help with managing large enterprises. All of these technologies are incorporated under the Zero Administration Initiative for Windows. Zero Administration Initiative for Windows includes infrastructure components such as Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM), management tools such as Systems Management Server and Microsoft Management Console, new developments such as policy management in Microsoft Windows NT® Version 5.0 operating system and interfaces for enterprise management vendors.

Windows NT is considered a black box from the point of view of most people familiar with the architecture and internals of UNIX. This has lead to misconceptions about the way Windows NT works, and consoled those who believe that UNIX is somehow more elegant that Windows NT. In my talk I'll outline the capabilities and architecture of Windows NT, comparing it with traditional UNIX implementations in key areas. What you'll find is that Windows NT is in many senses more extensible, more architecturally defined, and cleaner than many flavors of UNIX. This is due to its strong roots in Digital's OpenVMS operating system, a fact that Microsoft has not publicized, but that I'll shed some light on.
