BoF Descriptions

BoF for Red Hat Enterprise Linux Users
Speaker: Joshua Jensen, IBM
Tuesday, April 12, 7:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m., Salon 4/5

Join the informal meeting for those of us interested in, or currently using Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Come with questions, experiences, and needed solutions to share with fellow attendees.

Topics we may cover:

Solaris 10: Where We Are and Where We Are Going
Speaker: Dan Price, Sun Microsystems
Tuesday, April 12, 8:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m., Salon 4/5

Solaris 10 is the most revolutionary OS release in Sun's history. Join members of the Solaris development team to find out why, and to discuss where we should be headed.

Automating Network Configuration & Management
Speaker: Brent Chapman, Great Circle Associates
Wednesday, April 13, 8:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m., Salon H

What's the state of the art for automated network configuration and management? What systems and tools are available, either freely or commercially? Where are these issues being considered and discussed?

Over the last 15 years or so, much of the research in the system administration field has focused on automation. It's now well accepted that a well-run operation doesn't manage 10,000 servers individually, but rather uses tools like cfengine to manage definitions of those servers and then create instances of those servers as needed. In the networking world, though, most of us seem to be still manually configuring (and reconfiguring) every device.

UNIX as a Day Job for Aspiring Entertainers in Hollywood
Speaker: Hershel "Rabbs" Remer, a.k.a. the unixrabbi, Author of "JOTD The World's Greatest Computer Joke Book"
Wednesday, April 13, 7:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m., Salon 3

After a full day of serious technical lectures, join a professional comedian/UNIX admin/rabbi in what promises to be a fun-filled, hour-long discussion, and the best part is that there is no 2-drink minimum! Rabbs appeared in the highlight of the 2003 premiere of "Banzai" on Fox TV and has performed at the hottest comedy clubs in Hollywood. He is a cast member of the "Ding Dong Show," a popular show whose performances at the World Famous Comedy Store are filmed for an upcoming movie. The unixrabbi's adult humor joke book is unique in that it makes fun of the world of IT through the eyes of a UNIX admin.

Developing for Solaris and OpenSolaris
Speaker: Liane Praza, Sun Microsystems
Wednesday, April 13, 8:30 p.m.–10:30 p.m., Salon 4/5

Sun's Solaris includes a rich ecosystem of tools, features, and functionality designed to help the software developer. Join a group of Solaris kernel developers to explore what's available today and discuss how OpenSolaris will enhance the landscape.

Super User Group Meeting
Speaker: Hershel "Rabbs" Remer, a.k.a. the unixrabbi, President of the UNIX Users Association of Southern California
Wednesday, April 13, 8:30 p.m.–10:30 p.m., Salon 3

USENIX is providing a rare opportunity and treat for all user groups in the area—regardless of software affiliation—to congregate under one roof. From LUGs, to BUGs, to DRUGs, if you're into one of those, this event is for you. If you are a member of a Perl group, a wireless group, a Java group, an IEEE chapter, or any other computer club, you and your organization are cordially invited to attend and introduce yourselves to the Super Group. This promises to be a great place to meet and network with others in the industry.

SAGE Nominating Committee: Information and Call for Candidates
Speakers: Greg Rose and Mario Obejas, SAGE Leadership Committee Members
Thursday, April 14, 9:30 p.m.–10:30 p.m., Salon G

SAGE needs to have an elected Board as part of its transition to an independent organization. The SAGE Interim board has formed a Leadership Committee, chaired by Greg Rose, along with Esther Filderman, Adam Moskowitz, and Mario Obejas. The first job of this committee is to coordinate the first election. In this BoF, you can hear more about what is needed to be on the SAGE Board of Directors, discuss any issues with the election process, and maybe even get involved! This is not intended to be an update about SAGE itself; please come to the SAGE Community Meeting earlier in the evening.

Landmarks in a Rearview Mirror: The History of USENIX
Thursday, April 14, 7:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m., Salon E

It's USENIX's 30th Anniversary. Join long-time USENIX members Mike O'Brien, Peter Salus, Greg Rose, Lauren Weinstein, and others as they reminisce over the past 30 years of computing milestones.

Getting a Job in Today's Technology Job Market: Learn to Think Like a Recruiter
Speaker: Todd Cranston-Cuebas, Senior Technical Manager, Ticketmaster
Thursday, April 14, 7:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m., Salon G

If you're actively looking for a new opportunity, considering looking, or just want to know what to do in the future, come to this BoF hosted by Todd Cranston-Cuebas, Senior Technical Recuiter for Ticketmaster. Todd has been building technical teams for Ticketmaster for the past 5 years and has extensive experience in recruiting as both an in-house recruiter and as an outside "agency" recruiter. Todd will show you how to plan your job-hunt networking strategy and explain the best methods of leaving internet breadcrumbs so savvy recruiters can find you!

Trends in Internet Attack Tool Technology
Speaker: Jason Milletary, CERT/CC
Thursday, April 14, 7:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m., Salon J

The CERT/CC actively studies the capabilities of tools designed for and used to attack computer networks. An brief overview of attack tool trends that CERT/CC has seen over the past year will be presented, followed by a discussion of what threats other organizations have encountered and the effectiveness of current mitigation tools.
