FREENIX is a special track within the USENIX Annual Technical Conference. USENIX encourages the exchange of information and technologies between commercial product vendors and the free software world, as well as among the various free operating system alternatives themselves, and the FREENIX track has been created to further promote this process. FREENIX attendees may also attend any of the USENIX Conference offerings and informal get-togethers. FREENIX is also a showcase for the latest developments and interesting applications in the world of freely redistributable software, covering everything from FreeBSD to Linux, GNU to Samba, etc. The FREENIX track attempts to cover the full range of software which is freely redistributable in source code form or provides pointers to where the code can be found on the Internet.
