To study the temporal variations in Internet properties, we use the
traceroute data set collected by Paxson in 1995 [26]. The
data set includes traceroutes conducted between pairs of hosts drawn
from a set of 33 hosts distributed across (mainly academic sites in)
the U.S., Europe, South Korea, and Australia.
Despite the fact that the 1995 data set contains far fewer paths than
the 2000 data set, it provides an interesting data point for
comparison. The 1995 data set was gathered in late 1995, about 6
months after the demise of the NSFNET backbone (which used to provide
connectivity to academic sites in the U.S.) and early in the life of
the commercial Internet.
