Abstract
Traditionally, scientific computing has been
performed on large and expensive UNIX-based supercomputers. The
advent of high quality commodity hardware and software has the
potential to decrease the cost of scientific computing and change the
way in which it is performed.
We describe the Chicago Pile 6 a network of
computers running Windows NT, built in order to prototype scientific
computing methods in this type of environment. We discuss the
administrative requirements for the system and our approaches to
administering it.
