Persistence has been an active research area for over a decade and several taxonomies for pointer swizzling techniques have been proposed [14,10,12,20]. In this section, we describe important details about each of these taxonomies and highlight various similarities and differences among them. We also use this as a basis to provide motivation for a general classification of persistent systems based on granularity issues, which we describe in Section 3.
