Protocol activity occurs at various points in the execution of an application.
The entry points to the protocol can be synchronous or
asynchronous. Synchronous entry points are those at which
the application traps into the protocol and executes some protocol action.
The asynchronous entry points are entered as a result of incoming
messages generated by protocol action on other nodes in the system.
