Previous: Background
When a standard release of a large software product, such as an
operating system, is distributed to many users, it invariably needs
configuring to tailor it to the requirements of each
individual installation. Even within a single site, there can be a
huge difference between configurations of different machines;
the following are some examples of the parameters which may vary:
- Hardware configuration and drivers.
- Network configuration and servers.
- Installed software.
- Network services provided.
- Access control.
