CANDIDATE FOR DIRECTOR
Avi Rubin
I am honored to be nominated for reelection to the USENIX board. My current term
on the board has been a great learning experience as well as an opportunity for
me to give back to the organization that has structured my career. In addition
to my other board duties, I served on the scholastic committee that determines
how to allocate our good works money. We receive proposals and fund research as
well as student scholarships. Although it can be a lot of work, I find it
extremely rewarding to participate in this activity.
Serving on the board is not without its challenges. Our reserve fund has grown
smaller as the economy falters and as we recover from the September 11 terror
attacks. Conference attendance has dropped considerably and companies have
curtailed their spending. All of this has hurt USENIX, but we remain strong due
to our conservative investment style and our careful budgeting. I am interested
in serving on the Board of Directors again in order to maintain some continuity
and to continue to help steer USENIX in the right direction. The state of the
economy has forced the board to reduce our good works budget, making the
allocation of the remaining resources even more crucial. I plan on working hard
to ensure that we spend our money well, with the hope of bringing the best
young research and system administration minds into the USENIX community.
I would like to take this opportunity to endorse Mike Jones for Vice President
and Peter Honeyman for Secretary. Both have done an outstanding job the past two
years, and I would be very happy to serve with them again.
USENIX is a unique place for system administrators, academic researchers, and
technical managers to share their ideas and promote science. If I am reelected
to the board, I will strive to help USENIX maintain the standards of excellence
that have made this organization so wonderful. If you would like more
