2007 USENIX Annual Technical Conference Features Distinguished Speakers from Google, Second Life, and Amazon.com

Santa Clara, CA — Leading researchers and influential technologists from companies including Google, Amazon.com, and Linden Lab, creator of Second Life, gather to discuss the latest systems research and cutting-edge practices at the 2007 USENIX Annual Technical Conference, June 17–22, at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

USENIX '07 features six days of training with over 30 full- and half-day sessions on the latest techniques and best strategies, alongside a three-day technical program packed with provocative talks and a refereed papers track, renowned for presenting the latest in groundbreaking research. In addition, USENIX is partnering with the SANS Institute to offer two six-day security classes on hacker techniques, exploits, and incident handling, as well as accessing and securing wireless networks.

This year's keynote address, "The Impact of Virtualization on Computing Systems," delivered by Mendel Rosenblum, Stanford University, addresses how virtualization is changing the way computing is done in the industry today and how it is causing users to rethink how they view hardware, operating systems, and application programs.

The keynote kicks off a full slate of technical talks from industry leaders, including Werner Vogels, Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, Amazon.com, who discusses "Life is Not a State-Machine: The Long Road from Research to Production." Ron Lanphier, Linden Lab, talks about the release of the Second Life viewer source code, as well as explains what Linden Lab is doing to cope with the ever-increasing stress on the system. Jeffrey Dean, a Google Fellow, provides insight into the design and implementation of MapReduce, a programming model and an associated implementation for processing and generating large data. His colleague, Luis André Barroso, a Distinguished Engineer at Google, delivers a talk on "Warehouse-Scale Computers," focusing on failure handling and power management. The plenary closing session by Mary Lou Jepsen, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of One Laptop per Child, discusses "Closing the Digital Divide: The Latest Efforts from One Laptop Per Child."

USENIX '07 once again offers top-notch training sessions taught by leading researchers and well-known experts from around the globe on the latest technologies. Tutorials include administering in Linux in production environments, high-capacity email system design, Solaris 10 security features, TCP/IP weapons school, computer forensics, and next generation storage networking.

Refereed papers cover a range of topics, including tricks with virtual machines, network monitoring and management, distributed storage, data, and networked systems.
