USENIX Large Installation System Administration Conference: Celebrating
20 Years as the Premier Forum for Presenting the Newest
System and Network Advances
Washington, D.C. For the 20th consecutive year, USENIX, the Advanced Computing Systems Association, and SAGE, the USENIX SIG for Sysadmins, present the Large Installation System Administration Conference (LISA), the premier forum for addressing in-depth, real world IT challenges. Scheduled for December 38 in Washington, D.C., LISA '06 features an impressive slate of speakers from companies including Google, Symantec, Vmware, and Global Crossing.
This year's keynote, "Hollywood's Secret War on Your NOC," delivered by science fiction author Cory Doctorow, promises to be insightful and entertaining. Doctorow, co-editor of Boing Boing and former Director of European Affairs for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, examines Hollywood's efforts in banning new technology.
LISA '06, the largest conference exclusively for system and network administrators, delivers a program packed with over 50 full- and half-day sessions on the latest techniques and best strategies on topics including Ethereal and the Art of Debugging Networks; TCP/IP Weapons; Higher Order Perl; and Administering Linux in Production Environments.
The invited talks cover a range of thought-provoking and informative topics including, "Site Reliability at Google/My First Year at Google," a discussion by Tom Limoncelli which explores some of the technologies that enable Google's Web services to maintain their high uptime. DJ Byrne of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory presents "Open Source Software and Its Role in Space Exploration," and Eric Hennessey, Symantec Corp., discusses "High Availability: From Luxury to Commonplace Necessity in 10 Years."
The popular Guru Is In sessions include Doug Hughes of Global Crossing on spam and VMware's John Arrasjid, John Gannon, and Andy Knosp on virtualization and the virtual infrastructure.
Security remains a core theme, with this year's conference devoting an entire track to network security in areas including "Zombies and Botnets: Attacks on Messaging Security by Organized Criminal Enterprises," "Black Ops 2006: Pattern Recognition," and "Corporate Security: A Hacker Perspective."
The results of the Sysadmin of the Year contest, sponsored by Splunk, will be announced at LISA '06. The contest honors the work of system administrators and recognizes individual system administrators for their outstanding achievements.
The vendor exhibit at LISA '06 continues to grow, with over 50 companies showcasing the latest technologies and tools from industry leaders, startups, and open source projects.
