SAN DIEGO -- Keeping eBay's servers and networks humming 24X7 to serve its 75 million registered users bidding on over one billion items annually is a formidable task. Paul Kilmartin, Director, Availability and Performance Engineering at eBay delivers the keynote on the challenges of highly complex real-time computing at LISA '03, the 17th Large Installation Systems Administration Conference, here, October 26-31.

Sponsored by USENIX, the Advanced Computing Systems Association and SAGE, the System Administrators Guild, LISA '03 addresses today's most timely topics including a session led by Internet Software Consortium founder Paul Vixie on the controversy surrounding VeriSign's recent decision to redirect errant URLs to an advertising page.

With Spam at the top every administrator's problem list, the conference devotes a half-day symposium to combating unsolicited email with a demonstration of new effective tools, the latest research findings and forthcoming advances in anti-spam techniques.

Security is the focus of several invited talks including a behind the scenes look at how Argonne National Laboratory successfully revamped its security environment without compromising the ability of its scientists to collaborate with colleagues around the world. Find out how the San Diego Supercomputer Center, which does not use firewalls, has gone almost four years without an intrusion. Discover how network telescopes can track denial-of- service attacks and internet worms around the world. Learn some unexpected security lessons from "best in class" organizations.

Other invited talk topics include common problems and current trends in the outsourcing industry and building Linux clusters for large enterprises. A discussion led by k c claffy, CAIDA (Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis) explores how system administrators can help solve the top internet problems.

LISA '03 offers nearly 40 tutorials led by well-known experts covering essential administrative topics including LDAP and the latest Samba; intrusion detection and prevention systems; advanced administration and security topics and techniques; WiFi security and Perl.

A vendor exhibition offers demonstrations of the newest products from companies including Sun Microsystems, Legato, Network Appliance, Symark Software and Spinnaker Networks.
