2004 Election for Board of Directors

Matt Blaze CANDIDATE FOR DIRECTOR

Matt Blaze

For well over a decade, I have been accumulating a debt to USENIX that started with a graduate fellowship and is compounded by every new idea I learn or discuss at one of our conferences. But conferences are only the most visible component of USENIX's leadership in computing systems. I believe strongly that an equally important part of what keeps USENIX on the cutting edge of systems research and practice is the encouragement it gives to newcomers and young talent. USENIX stands out among computing societies in its support for, and the warm welcome given to, students and new systems researchers and practitioners.

Especially under today's difficult economic climate, USENIX's vitality—and ultimately its value to all its members—depends on finding creative ways to continue being the place people turn to when they enter our field. As a Board member, I'd work especially hard to keep our commitment to new talent a high priority.

Biography: Matt Blaze is a professor of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. Before that, he spent a dozen years at AT&T Labs/Bell Labs in New Jersey. His work centers around security (he's chairing the USENIX Security Symposium this year).
