The Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts and the USENIX association, in cooperation with Linux International, are pleased to announce the opening of web based registration for the 3rd Annual Atlanta Linux Showcase to be held at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta on October 12-16 1999.
As an added bonus, the first 100 Technical Conference registrations completed over the web will be given a complimentary OS Wars t-shirt. These t-shirts feature several prominent members of the Linux and Open Source movement in a parody scene sure to be recognized. These shirts are certain to be a big hit and a collectible as well. Supplies are limited so be sure to register now and get yours.
Our first keynote this year will be Jeremy Allison from the Samba project. Jeremy's talk, "Open Source Development of a Closed Source Protocol", will discuss the trials and tribulations of trying to develop Samba by reverse engineering Microsoft's SMB protocol.
We are also very proud to announce the addition of several private developer
"hot house" sessions to take place prior to the show. These sessions
bring the widely separated members of a development team together in a
dedicated work environment where they can work on issues best covered
face-to-face. Similar events such as the Linux Kernel Kongress have produced
major breakthroughs in the projects that participated. We hope to continue the
success of such events.
Sessions scheduled so far are:
Part of the great success of the Linux movement has been the community. To show proper respect for the community's contribution, we have established a monument to the contributions the community has made to the Linux movement. The Community Tower is a two-story tower that will host the community oriented groups and organizations inside and immediately around the base as well as providing a lounge area where Linux enthusiasts can mingle and chat. The second floor of the tower will be a small conference area ideal for press interviews or meetings complete with windows, air-conditioning, and spectacular view of of the show.
ALS will also feature the Linux In Action booth where both new and experienced users of Linux can get hands-on experience with Linux running on various hardware platforms. Also, as an added feature, the Linux In Action team will be offering several hands-on training sessions focusing on how to install Linux on an existing Windows machine so that both Operating Systems co-exist and the machine can be can be booted into either environment. This session is free to all showcase visitors, however, seating is limited to a first come first serve basis.

Linux
Linux is a UNIX-like operating system, an alternative to MacOS and Microsoft
Windows. Created by Linus Torvalds in 1991, its popularity has greatly
increased in the past two years. Estimates state that there are 7 million Linux
systems world wide, making it one of the most popular UNIX like operating
systems on the market. Linux, developed in cooperation with the Free Software
Foundation, is released under the GNU General public license, making it and

Atlanta Linux Showcase
The Atlanta Linux Showcase is the community's premier technical and community
show organized and run by a group of computer professionals wishing to help
promote Linux. ALS is run entirely by volunteers, and Atlanta Linux Showcase,

Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts
The Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts (ALE) is the Atlanta Linux Users Group dedicated
to advocating the use of Linux and providing an educational resource to the
