Keynote Address: Science and the Chimera
James "The Amazing" Randi

"The Amazing" Randi will discuss and reveal the nonsense that presently passes for science and is being promoted by the media as factual for their own purposes. There will be a demonstration of the techniques used by psychics to deceive the public.

James Randi is a professional magician, author, lecturer, amateur archaeologist, and amateur astronomer. He was the subject of a NOVA program dealing with his life work. He is a founding fellow of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), a non-profit organization of academics and other experts devoted to the examination of paranormal, occult, and supernatural claims.

Mixing UNIX and PC Operating Systems via Microkernels: Experiences Using Rhapsody for Apple Environments and OpenNT for NT Systems
Speakers: Stephen R. Walli, Softway Systems and Brett Halle, Apple Computers, Inc.

OpenNT provides a complete environment on top of the Windows NT microkernel for porting and running UNIX applications side-by-side with Win32 applications. Stephe will discuss:

* the technical aspects of providing such an environment subsystem and its architecture
* integrating the two security models
* integrating the overall execution environments
* porting and run-time experience and issues

Rhapsody takes a different approach. Its foundation is the CMU Mach3 MicroKernel, plus BSD 4.4 lite. The traditional Apple environment is then spliced on top of it. While Apple has attempted to hide the UNIX side of Rhapsody from their typical users, they will want it to be available to higher education users, etc. This talk will discuss the technical aspects of how Rhapsody was put together.

Succumbing to the Dark Side of the Force: The Internet as seen from an Adult Web Site
Speaker: Daniel Klein, Erotika

The adult industry is by far the biggest consumer of net bandwidth. It is arguably also the largest cash source for content providers. Without getting into the "politics" of the industry as a whole, this talk will examine the many facets of this much maligned (and hugely subscribed) dark side of the Web. This talk will examine what it means to be in a service industry, advertising, site scaling and bandwidth, monitoring, load sharing, load shedding, and load stealing. It will also look at issues of security, payment methods, billing, theft, risk, and spamming. It will also show how data mining can be a boon and a bane, and look at issues of copyright protection and abrogation. Finally, issues of site automation, what kind of people run adult sites, and how much money can be made will be explored.
