BIRDS-OF-A-FEATHER SESSIONS

Lead or attend a BoF! Meet with your peers! Present new work! Don't miss these special activities designed to maximize the value of your time at the conference. The always popular evening Birds-of-a-Feather sessions are very informal gatherings of persons interested in a particular topic.

Vendor BoFs
Want to demonstrate a new product or discuss your company's latest technologies with NSDI attendees? Host a Vendor BoF! These sponsored one-hour sessions give companies a chance to talk about products and proprietary technology—and they include promotional benefits. Email sponsorship@usenix.org if you're interested in sponsoring a Vendor BoF. Click here for more information about sponsorship opportunities.

Scheduling a BoF
To schedule a BoF, simply write the BoF title as well as your name and affiliation on one of the BoF Boards located in the registration area. If you have a description of our BoF you'd like posted on this Web page, please schedule your BoF on the BoF board, then send its title, the organizer's name and affiliation, and the date, time, and location of the BoF to bofs@usenix.org with "NSDI '10 BoF" in the subject line.

BoF Descriptions

VMware Virtualized Networking Vendor BoF
Thursday, April 29, 8:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., Valley

VMware has done a lot of innovations in virtualized networking over the past decade. In this session we would cover a few projects both from current product line and future products. We would cover the following issues:

  • Fault Tolerance in Networking: Fault Tolerance is a new feature available in vSphere product which allows 100% uptime by keeping a backup VM in lockstep with the primary VM. It does this by recording all the I/O at primary VM and replaying it at the secondary VM and switching to backup VM anytime the primary VM fails.
  • Network Plugin Architecture: NPA allows direct assignment of the virtual functions of an SR-IOV device to the guest VM. This results in better performance as the networking stack is bypassed and at the same time lets the hypervisor keep most of the value adds like vMotion, Suspend/Resume etc. It does this by using a novel split driver model in the hypervisor and in the guest VM.
  • Scale out Networking: There has been a lot of research on scaling out the networks to allow an unconstrained network for the cloud era applications. This includes technologies like VEPA, port profiles and overlay networks. We would have an open conversation on these topics and would like to share our thoughts.
