Short, pithy, and fun, Work in Progress reports introduce interesting new or ongoing work. Work in Progress reports are five-minute presentations with at most one minute for questions; the time limits
will be strictly enforced. We are particularly interested in presenting students' work.

This year, we plan to acknowledge the best presentations in the following categories: Most Entertaining, Most Controversial, and Most Tantalizing - this last category is for talks that most whet our appetites for the eventual full paper.

If you have work you would like to share, a cool idea that is not quite ready for publication, or a tale of caution for the community, send a one- or two-paragraph summary to bnoble@umich.edu. For full consideration, (and a chance at the best talk slots!), send a one-paragraph summary to bnoble@umich.edu, on or before Friday, June 9th, 2006. A schedule of presentations will be posted by the end of lunch on Tuesday, and speakers meeting the deadline will be notified in advance of the conference. Last-minute submissions will be accommodated only on a space-available basis.

Lessons from Wearable Computing and Beyond

Prof. Daniel P Siewiorek, Carnegie Mellon University, US

The confluence of decades of computer science and computer engineering research in multi-modal interaction such as speech and gesture recognition; machine learning such as classification and feature extraction; software such as web browsers and distributed agents; electronics such as energy efficient microprocessors and head mounted displays; and design methodology in user centered design and rapid prototyping have enabled a new class of computers - wearable computers. We will review over 15 years of experience in developing and deploying wearable computers in domains as diverse as manufacturing, maintenance, operations, and medical monitoring leading to lessons that are not taught in the classroom. These experiences are summarized in categories for easier recall: User, Corporal, Attention, Manipulation, and Power (UCAMP). We will  conclude with a projection of future directions in human based mobile computers.

Mobile and fixed applications in a converging world

With the success of mobile 2G and 3G networks users are increasingly turning to mobile applications for all of their personal communication. The phenomenal mobile subscriber growth, on one hand,  and the capabilities in device platforms in terms of bandwidth, processing power, memory, and displays, on the other hand are the key ingredients for true mass-market mobile multimedia applications. The next step is mobile mass-market interaction with content. In the homes, the computing and multimedia capabilities are at the center of the next wave of rich consumption, communication and control applications. The combination of mobile and fixed system characteristics in a converged world will bring users value, richness, control and ease of use. We will cover key enabling technologies for the continued growth of mobile and fixed applications in a converging world.
