HotOS-V Registration and Transportation Information

To: HotOS-V Registrants

From: Joseph Boykin, HotOS-V Registration Chair

Subject: Registration

Thank you for your interest in registering for the Fifth Workshop on Hot Topics in Operating Systems (Previously called the "Workshop on Workstation Operating Systems"). This package contains all information necessary to register for the workshop. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

It is the goal of the HotOS organizers to provide a thought provoking, stimulating, and some might say rowdy atmosphere for the discussion of the future trends facing users and designers of operating systems. While there will be formal presentations of development activities, research and thoughts, each attendee is expected to participate in the workshop by discussing, criticizing and throwing darts.

Please return the completed registration form with payment to me by March 27, 1995. A confirmation letter will be sent within 48-hours of receipt of your registration form -- if you do not receive that letter, you should resend the registration form. Please note that space in the workshop is limited to sixty active participants in the field; returning the registration form is not a guarantee of admission. If you decide to FAX your registration, you should note that the FAX number is a private FAX modem and is hence secure for sending your credit card number.

Copies of the WWOS-III and WWOS-IV proceedings are still available. The price is $25 including postage. To order, send a check payable to the "IEEE Computer Society" to me. The HotOS-V proceedings will be available at the workshop. Additional copies of the HotOS-V proceedings will be available at a special workshop rate of $25.

Please note that this workshop is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society. As such, CS members will receive a discount on the conference registration. If you are not a member of the Computer Society, a membership application is enclosed (what a coincidence!). In addition to being the worlds largest organization representing computer scientists and engineers, the society publishes many books and periodicals which you will find useful. If that isn't enough to make you join, consider that you can pay for Computer Society membership and register for the workshop for about the same amount as registering as a non-member!

Not so fond memories of our days as starving students compel us to provide discounts to students. However, please note that this discount is only for student members of the Computer Society, not just students in general.

As with the previous four WWOS workshops, I'm sure you will find this year's event informative, useful and thought provoking. Bring your thinking caps but also be prepared for a good time.

Housing for the workshop will be at the Rosario Resort and Spa. Our special rate is $58 per night single or double occupancy or $80/night for a suite (plus 7.5% tax). To reserve a room you must send the enclosed hotel reservation form to the hotel; they do not accept telephone reservations. Hotel reservations must be received by April 4, 1995 to receive our discount rate.

Rosario Resort & Spa

Eastsound, WA 98245-2222
Phone: 206-376-2222/800-562-8820
Fax: 206-376-2289

The Rosario has a well-known spa and indoor pool. Bring your bathing suit. Also, bring your rain gear; if you've never been to Seattle clear days are rare, but don't leave your sun glasses home either -- you never know!

This is the home of the Orca killer whale (did you think they called it "Orcas Island" for nothing?!?) We are organizing a group whale watch for Saturday, after the workshop. There is a check box (or you can write in a number if friends/significant others would also like to join us) on the registration form if you are interested. Price has not yet been determined and is not included in the registration fee.

There are also miles of hiking trails through beautiful Moran State Park convenient to the resort.

Getting there: We expect most participants to fly to the Seattle-Tacoma International airport (SeaTac) and make their way from there to Orcas Island. Getting to Orcas Island isn't quite as simple as hopping on the airporter bus to downtown Seattle, but the location should make the trip worthwhile. Here are some suggestions for getting to the island:

Bus/Boat/Bus: The most common method (and cheapest) for getting there is to take the Airporter Shuttle (206-679-0600 or 800-235-5247) from SeaTac to the Anacortes Ferry landing. From Anacortes, you get on the Washington State Ferry (206-464-6400) for Orcas Island. Rosario will then meet you with their van at the ferry landing. (Phone them before you leave Anacortes to arrange for a pickup; the shuttle bus is complimentary). Subject to change, but currently the shuttle leaves SeaTac every two hours beginning at 7:00 AM, with the last shuttle leaving at 7:00 PM. It is a 2 1/2 hour trip to Anacortes. Advance reservations are needed.

Plane/Bus: Harbor Air (800-359-3220 or 206-340-0342) flies from SeaTac to the village of Eastsound on Orcas Island. Rosario will meet you there with a van and take you to the resort (again, call Rosario before leaving).

Bus/Seaplane: Kenmore Air (800-543-9595 or 206-486-8400) has a seaplane service from Lake Union in downtown Seattle direct to the Rosario dock. There is a Greyline bus shuttle from SeaTac to Lake Union available through Kenmore Air, or you can take a taxi from SeaTac to Lake Union.

Car/Ferry/Car: You can rent a car at SeaTac, drive to the Anacortes Ferry, take the car on the ferry, and then drive to Rosario. A benefit of this method is that you will then have a car available on the island for side trips. For more information on driving to Rosario see the Washington State Ferry Schedule for Orcas Island and Driving Directions to Rosario Resort.
