17th USENIX Security Symposium Premiers Live Streaming for Greater Accessibility

San Jose, CA—The 17th USENIX Security Symposium, taking place July 28-Aug. 1 in San Jose, once again delivers a top-notch conference agenda that covers the spectrum of today's most pressing security challenges, including a keynote address delivered by Debra Bowen, California Secretary of State, and talks by security experts from companies including Google and VMware.

This year's USENIX Security Symposium offers live video streaming of portions of the conference, making it possible to attend the conference remotely. USENIX and Linux Pro Magazine are teaming to broadcast two tutorials and the entire invited talks track of the conference. For those who don't have time to watch in real-time, all the talks can be reviewed individually at the viewers convenience in the archive. The live streaming of the keynote will be open to everyone. Sign-up is available for live streaming here.

Whether attending in-person or remotely, security professionals, researchers, and system and network administrators can add to their security expertise with a two-day training program offering eight full-day tutorials on the latest topics such as botnets, computer forensics, securing virtual environments, and understanding and deploying trusted hardware.

California Secretary of State Bowen kicks off the three-days of invited talks with a keynote address, "Dr. Strangevote or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Paper Ballot." Hugh Thompson, People Security, discusses, "Hackernomics"; Darren Lacey, Johns Hopkins University/John Hopkins Medicine, explores, "Managing Insecurity: Practitioner Reflections on Social Costs of Security"; Tal Garfinkel examines, "Enterprise Security in the Brave New (Virtual) World"; and Niels Provos discusses, "The Ghost in the Browser and Other Frightening Stories About Web Malware."

USENIX continues it reputation for delivering the best new research by selecting 27 refereed papers in a variety of subject areas, including Web security, voting and trusted systems, privacy, and botnet detection.

There are also a variety of workshops held in conjunction with the main conference, including EVT '08 (2008 USENIX/ACCURATE Electronic Voting Technology Workshop), July 28-29; CSET '08 (Workshop on Cyber Security Experimentation and Test) on July 28; WOOT '08 (2nd USENIX Workshop on Offensive Technologies) on July 28; HotSec '08 (3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Security) on July 29; and MetriCon 3.0 (Third Workshop on Security Metrics) on July 29.
